Historical Planting
Although Fanshawe Gate Hall dates back to
the 13th century, the architecture of the present house is predominantly
16th century. Over the past decade, the garden has been substantially
redesigned to reflect more closely the style of the Tudor era. This
was the century when the Fanshawe family was at the height of its
influence - Henry Fanshawe became Remembrancer of the Exchequer
to Queen Elizabeth 1st in 1566 - and the Fanshawe coat of arms has
been incorporated into the wind vane and the wrought iron entrance
gates.
